LED is called light emitting diode and it is a semiconductor that emits light on certain wave length i.e. color. When LED is switch on, the electrons are able to recombine with the holes within the device, releasing energy in form of photons. This is called effect of electroluminescence.

The energy efficiency of LED products is typically characterized using efficacy, which in basic terms is the ratio of power input to light output --- or more technically, emitted flux (lumens) divided by power draw (watts). LED efficacy of an integrated LED lamp or an LED luminaire is different when compared to other luminaire.

Real lighting fixture, important factors such as the performance of control gear, depreciation of the luminous flux with increasing temperature in the junction and optical loss reduces the overall efficacy system. Whereas, the efficacy of the LED is improving rapidly more than 200 lumens last many years.

The usage of LED technology helps in many ways. It not reduces the cost of electricity bills but also give longer service without increasing the overheads of maintenance and replacements.
